Tried to pick up a iron chest full of metal plates, but I didn't have any room in my charactor inventor.

Thousands of plates spread in a thin layer.... :D

Been there done that, construction robots are your friend. Use them to dismantle stuff and they'll move extra items into storage for you. But yea i kind of wish they just make it you cant pick up a box if there isn't enough room in your inventory or you geta prompt if you really want to pick it up

There was a ~5 second lag at the end, instead of the box dissapearing...

I didn't try to clean it all up, just went back to the last autosave.

We wanted to fix this some time ago (basically give a message dialog or don't allow to mine the chest). But somehow the chest bombs have become a Factorio folklore :D It might still get fixed in the future though ...

How if you make it a switch in the options?

I think that's funny, and that force you to use your brain. Keep it like that.

This behavior at least has to be altered or the lag addressed for multiplayer, can you imagine ordering bots to deconstruct hundreds of full "chest bombs". Dat lag.

Bots wont harvest chests if they have stuff in it. The construction bots (not logistics) will take the contents to the closest storage box

Interesting, I could swear I used a destruction blueprint thingy to cause a chestsplosion but maybe I am mistaken or the behavior was changed.

To be honest, I don't use bots, they are too cheaty in my book and break the smooth crisp pace and fun of gameplay for me.

I'm glad the devs had limited the chest bomb to a single possible instance, now all they have to do is speed up or somehow fix the "dumping" process of a single chest.

Hahaha..love it!

We've probably all been there. I myself had this mishap with stone bricks in a steel chest.

What a goddam mess! :D

Wait until you do it with a 256 stacked item like circuits...

A work around that I started doing is put down another steel chest, ctrl click an empty space in your inventory to put everything into the new chest. This gives you plenty of room to move the first chest contents. Then when your done, pick up the steel chest and all should be well

Keep the chest bombs. Even after playing +100 hrs I still occasionally find myself doing this. It's a good sign that I should go sleep.

One thing I've always wondered is why can we replace complex machines in-place with them keeping all their settings (e.g assemblers) but can't do the same to upgrade chests. If we'd be able to change chests so that they'd automagically move as much stuff to the new one as possible the bomb wouldn't exist. About 90% of the time I trigger that is when I'm trying to upgrade a chest :)

I figured out the problem I've had.

When a chest is modified by a mod then that can't be used to replace other chests.

F-mod does something with iron chest and I can't use that to replace either wooden or steel chests (neither is modified by any mods). Replacing wooden with steel one works just fine.
