My refinery seems to be set up correctly however, it will only run 4 cycles and I have to keep re-applying the recipe so it will continue to run...is there something im doing wrong with this?

Your refinery probably can not store one of its products. All three types have to have storage space available for the refinery to keep working.
By re-entering the recipe, you're basically emptying the refinery so it will run for a short while again..

Hey! you were right! my light crude for some reason was not making it to t he tank- I had to run a new pipe and that did it- Thanks for the assistance!

Might have been the original pipe got some other liquid in it. Its easy to let two wrong pipes touch in some way for a moment with so many different liquids near each other and then it jams the "contaminated" pipe since Factorio wont let them actually mix.
