I think it would be a nice comfort addition if the character automatically chop trees when trying to build something (same for construction robots in case or placed schematics). This especially bugs me if I want to build railroads trough a forest. Currently I am stuck with either building very slowly by manually chopping the blocking trees or starting a war against nature with the shotgun (in which case I feel somewhat guilty).

You should try to burn them, it feels quite satisfying

Just refering to the railroad example the already given options are not satisfying to me.
The capsule AoE is too big for this purpose. With the shotgun I ended up to chop down all damaged trees, because the look ugly (screw you OCD!) which results in nearly no speed-benefit
Third option would be to use deconstruction planner, but according to the given example again there is probably no roboport in reach.

I'd reccomend a car, then.

The car is about as efficient as just chopping them down by hand. Reason being, every few moments you have to repair the car by getting out, making/using repair packs, and getting back in. Now if perhaps we could get a bulldozer, I would be all in favor of that, but that seems a bit of a pipe dream.

If I ever needed to place tracks through the forest I would just walk straight shooting shotgun - provides enough clearance

That or roboports for even greater finesse.
