Trying to have a single train input to my main factory interact with a series of different input train lines. But I can't lay track so that stack inserters from one track input into chests that output into the other track via stack inserters as well b'c track can only be built one every other square. Seems lame and not fair, do I really have to use red inserters? That is a major hit to capacity. Is there another way to connect that is efficient and boasts high capacity? Thanks.

Even just a a double-sized chest (2x1) would solve this issue. But is there a better way currently? I hope I'm missing something, because this feels like a big oversight.

So I figured it out. You have to lay track diagonally, then you get a spacing of 3.
Such a fu#king puzzle game sometimes.

You could use a 3rd set of Stack Inserters, and 2 tiles per chest worth of Express transport belt to fix the even/odd parity issue for horizontal and vertical setups.

You could do Track -> Stack Inserter -> Stack Inserter -> Chest -> Stack Inserter -> Track with 4 spaces between tracks, couldn't you?

This can be done without puzzling. Classic belt unloader into a classic belt loader and thats it. Might look neat if this is done side by side, but why exactly?

The only way to fix this would be to have tracks also on uneven tiles. That needs special s-curves (shift one, three ... tiles) to be implemented.

Belts have FAR less throughput than chests.
This does seem a bit obtuse though. Tracks can only be laid every 2nd tile (otherwise it would be impossible to connect them) however inserter > chest pair is, well, a pair. So you can count up to and over a thousand tiles between rails, you still can't unload from one and into the other using only inserters and chests. Unless an inserter can drop onto another inserter's tile (not the pickup tile, the middle tile) as zoiX suggested?

Aha! The perfect job for my latest ludicrous invention. Behold! The CHEST INSERTER:
Is it a chest? Is it an inserter? It is BOTH!!!!

Nope they can't (well, normal ones can't ).

Just... what... xD
If you're going modded though I'd recommend Bob's Inserters, any inserter can pick up and drop from/to any tile in a 3 tile radius.

You could also use cars as 2x2 chests.

But you need 3 tile wide chest for it to work.
Apparently they are wide enough:

I like that car method. One of those tricks that you figure out early on, and then you forget about it.
Don't forget that train wagons are two spaces wide, so you have the option of doubling up on red inserters. It still doesn't match stack inserter throughput, but it's better than nothing. Alternatively, you can skip the chests and go directly wagon->wagon with only a single track width gap.

But you can do track - stack inserter - car - stack inserter - track
