Possible to modify range through research?

Is it possible to modify the range of a weapon through research, or do I just need to create a new item with a larger range (and include my current weapon as part of the recipe so I'm not adding extra junk to their inventory)? I know you can modify damage and speed (and i tried simply using gun-range and on the off chance ammo-range)
also, is there (currently, i know the wiki is a WIP) a list of valid types?

P.S. I'm asking because I'm creating a sniper rifle mod and want to give the option to start with a slow rifle that is just within the range of creeper turrets and then upgrade it to where you can use it with getting damaged. (um, quick question in reference to the rocket turrets I've tried running away from the rockets but they catch up, however i've noticed that if I place a turret that is within range and then I pick it up after the rockets are fired the rockets disappear lol not sure if that is a bug or intended)

It is not possible now, but is planned for future.

You can make an item called sniper-1 another called sniper-2 that is crafted with the sniper-1, but you need to have the research
