LONG DESCRIPTION
I produced this mod because I find it annoying to have to 'criss cross' my factories when building robots.
In the vanilla game, batteries are made in chemical plants which I usually build in an oil-processing area, and the robot-frames are made in assembling machines which I tend to keep on my production bus. The robot-frames need batteries.
I visualise chemical plants as places where a chemical reaction is required to produce something. I also think that in the real-world, batteries are closer to being 'assembled' rather than made with a 'chemical reaction' in a plant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksxSOwA933M
This mod does not stop batteries from being made in chemical plants, it just adds the ability to make them in assembly machines.
How it works
A recipe is added to the vanilla game so that batteries can be made in assembly machines.
The research tree is amended so that when batteries are available in chemical plants, they are also available in assembly machines.
This mod is now available on the mod portal for factorio versions 0.13 and 0.14. The first post in the topic has been updated with the new download locations.
Both the v0.13 and v0.14 mods have been updated to fix an issue that this mod always used the vanilla recipe for a battery. It now uses the battery recipe after all other mods may have changed it, such as Bob's plates.
This mod and its partner Remove Chemical Batteries will not be updated for v0.16 of factorio when it arrives.
My thinking was wooly.
Even though the mod allows batteries to be assembled on a main bus, the acid still needs to be piped to the assembler. The footprint of a chemical plant is 3x3, the same as an assembler, so why not just use a chemical plant on the bus?
This bug means that if you have researched battery with this mod and the Remove Chemical Batteries mod both active, but later decide to stop using both mods, then you are unable to make batteries any more!
It's recommended that if you use this mod and Remove Chemical Batteries mod, then you upgrade both immediately, as the fix includes a migration script to get rid of the problem on any existing saves that you have.
With 0.15 due to become stable imminently, factorio 0.13 support is withdrawn and the mod has been removed from the portal for version 0.13 of factorio.

I've changed my mind about this after some users pointed out that by using level 3 assemblers, they get a 40% productivity bonus instead of the maximum of 30% from a Chemical Plant.
This is deprecated, and won't be updated for 0.17.
If you have maps that use this mod, you can replace the assemblers with chemical plants, If you were using L3 assemblers with 4 productivity modules, unfortunately you will get a loss of bonus, so you may need to so some rebalancing.
