Inserters cannot grab items moving away from them

Inserters attempting to grab an item from a fast or express belt will miss the item if the inserter is positioned behind an exit tunnel.
If there are multiple items of the same type on the same belt segment, they will grab some of the items, but miss the first one or two.

That's by design, the belt moves the item too fast for the inserter to grab it in that setup.

I thought that at first, but then this seemed like odd behaviour. It grabs all except the first two? Seems like it should grab none or grab all.

Thats because it sees the first, and tries to grab, but can't reach, but is then already in position to grab all the next ones

It is just fast enough to grab it if it is already in the correct azimuth angle and does not have to move but just grab.

It is actually pretty consistent. You can see the same behavior on a a straight belt if the belt is faster than the inserter. however not as noticeable if you have stack size bonus.
