Controlling flow of the individual sides of transport belts

So what I mean is you can have one side of the belt stop at one spot and allow the other side to continue unhindered. After the blocked spot the transport belt functions normally. See the attachment for an example. The pipes act as the supposed "valves" or whatever you want to call it. Looking in the belts direction, the right side (cogs) continue for the length of the transport belt while the left side have several stops. This is undoubtedly not a new idea so if you've seen it before I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. And I know this is doable in game with smart inserters and other workarounds but I figure this should not have to be so advanced. It's basically the equivalent of sticking a piece of metal in the ground.

Something like this?

Was not aware of that trick. That is awesome, thanks a lot.
Still though, having it be on the belt itself would mean no extra foot print. I don't know squat about modding or programming so I'm not sure how easy it would be.

Currently lines of transport belts are not moddable - we can't make a belt that has only one side or block one of sides.

Figured that might be an issue. Oh well, hopefully it's possible in the future!
