New Rail Planner won't do what I want

This isn't really a bug, and it isn't really a suggestion. I guess it's more of a lack in design. Anyway, a screenshot:
Can we find some way of telling the planner we want to do something different? Perhaps the R key or similar can make it change modes? Before, I would simply build the rails as I want, and while it was a pain to have 2 different types of rails, and for curves having to rotate thru 8 different orientations, but at least I got the job done. I eventually solved this problem by building twice, but it was quite the ordeal. Took longer than it would have to rotate all possible orientations of a curve.
So I pose the question: how am I suppose to tell the rail planner to make an offset? I started by placing it as it runs here, and found that's not enough space. So I moved the offset up a notch, and have a heck of a time placing the rails. Can we find some way of telling the planner we want to do something different?
