So, I am trying to get it to split so i can make red and green science, but for some reason it won't do it. It sends it to one direction as shown in the picture

You can't insert items into a splitter. Inserter them on a belt.
(P.S. You can take items from the middle of a belt, you don't need to split it into a dead end.)

I know I can, I was just removing the belts for demonstration

he meant that the inserter is putting the items directly on the splitter. the items should be instead put on a belt that leads into the splitter

Note: You CAN insert items into a splitter. However by doing so you place them AFTER THE SPLITTING MECHANISM because arms place things on belts on the far side of the belt. If you use a long handed inserter to put the item on the side of the belt before the split, it works fine (but is clunky IMO)
Think of belts (and each square of a spliter) not has having 2 sides but instead having 4 quadrants, left front, left back, right front, and right back. Things placed in the back will be split. Those placed in the front will not.
