also, most attempts will result in 'sprite acid-splash-3 (or whatever its called)' failing to load correctly

The titel does not say it all, what do you mean by "will not load past 10%"? Does it crash? Does it stay at 10% for ever?

What do you mean you can not get "into" it? Do you get an error message? Do you not know how to open it?
What command? What are you doing? Be specific!
Please post your
log file.
10% sounds like a mod problem, try removing all mods.

I load the game, loading screen displays, it gets to 10% loaded, and then crashes. completely vanilla, not one mod. unable to post log file, as i can no longer find it (as in, it has disappeared from where it should be). using an unregistered windows 7. the commands im attempting are in the link that Dave posted

Ok, now:
- what are your hardware specs (especially graphics card and VRAM)?
- what installation do you have (steam or .zip or .exe)
- list all contents (files and folders) or make a screenshot of the User data directory you open it by filling in %appdata%\factorio in any windows address bar or in the windows run command line
