custom Tech Modifiers?

I am attempting to add a new tech that increases the speed of belts, inserters and assembling machines. I see that the known modifiers are more or less hard-coded and was wondering if there was any way to make it work? even with lua scripts emulating what the game does by default?

You would need to create a new belt for each level of upgrade, and find/replace them all when the tech is researched.
