I couldn't also reproduce this: Sometime copying to smart inserter doesn't work.

You can copy it's filer but not limitations

Thanks for the report. I found a bug that the logistic condition wasn't copied when performing the entity copy settings. This will be fixed for the 0.9.1. Also when copying the smart inserter settings with a red / green condition and no red / green wire in the inventory nothing happens (no wire is connected and no condition is copied). This is not a bug, that is intentional (the player must have a corresponding wire in his inventory), I just added a console message that says that, because it was not obvious. If there is some other problem please speak up, otherwise this is considered resolved:)

in my case, shift+building smart inserter didn't work at all. That means, the inserter didn't even get built. I simply set a filter for iron ore.

Shift build has been replaced by copy / paste entity settings. That means that you build the entity as normal. Then copy the settings (shift + right click by default) from selected entity of the same type and apply it / paste it to the entity you built (shift + left click by default). When holding shift with entity selected there will be green selection box around entity that will be used as a copy source.
