Can anyone tell me what is up with this setup?

I can get the train to go left to right, but not right to left.

The Left station should be placed on the right side of the track, a train only accepts stations that is placed right of the train drive direction.

Sorry for the double post, but I'm guessing that you can't put a corner section directly attached to another corner section?

Nope, you always need at least 1 diagonal track joining them.

You can but you have to fill the little missing area with a single straight track placed in diagonal.

Add small short tracks between corner ones and they will connect.
