New Hope Mission 3 is a bummer

I just got the game a few days ago and man, I was hooked immediately. What a fantastically awesome game. I spent hours on New Hope Mission 2 just building that train around the map and creating a giga-network of mines, belts and trains. I absolutely adore the building component of the game.
So, it was pretty disappointing to run into New Hope Mission 3 and find that, not only does it completely remove the resource-gathering/building component of the game, but instead throws just an endless ways of basic enemies at you until you win or die. The only real solution I had to winning it was cheesing with "Hopscotch Turrets" where I just moved 4-5 turrets slowly across the map towards the enemy base. What a lame way to turn a fantastic game into a chore.
I don't mind a combat oriented mission, but couldn't it at least have some semblance of base building? Something like building up to overpower the enemy bases growing around you? Constructing an armada with your resources and taking them into battle? Surely removing the resource-gathering/building component of the game was not the best this mission could do?
I am worried if there are more missions like this coming up. If there are, I may just stick to sandbox or something - despite enjoying the goal-based missions prior to this one. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
