Vehicles from parts

There is a game I like very much: "Hill climb racing" (http://www.fingersoft.net/). The advantage of the car depends on the parts and how much of them you combine together (Tip : Use the buggy on the moon, brings most points).
How about vehicles, which are created from different parts. And the characteristic of the end product depends on the parts.
Lets say there are 10 parts, on which a vehicle can be constructed:
- wheels
- brakes
- steering
- chassis
- motor
- shock absorbers
- gearing
- protection
- weapons
- inventory
Also some other characteristics like "connectors with other vehicles", "swimming", "insertable" etc. But the main idea is, that every part can be researched or whatever to a better type. Lets say, there are not 20 tiers for each part, only 2-5. And most parts can be reused in other vehicles. So that you can drive in the end faster than the train with a high precision.
Lets say this vehicle needs 10 steps to be produced (1 for every part): Some very slow belt. You need to fill all stations with the right amount of items and then Inserters put things at the right place, at the end there is a new car.
