The idea of robot collaboration I personally think would be really cool and a helpful aspect to the game to make resources move around one's base faster and more efficiently.
Let me explain what I mean:

Let's say you have a base that spans 1000k space's width and 1000k height and this base functions mainly on robots. Now to move things around this base will take a very long time with robots because they have to recharge in places and travel the distance, now my thinking is that if the robots could hand items over to one another then this would help speed up the whole process. While one robot is traveling, if it finds the need to recharge it could have the option to hand ist item over to another robot in either the same roboport its charging at or one close by so that the items are still moving at nearly full speed across the base. Now yes i do know that if your base was this large you wouldn't be getting robots to do this task you would have trains instead but even still. Robots that can work together to get the task done at a faster rate with down time I think would be really cool.

Logistic bots have advantages and disadvantages, like about any transportation system. I don't think we should try to erase the disadvantages of one kind of transportation medium when it's an advantage another medium has.
Right now, you have :
- Robots for short distance irregular demand
- belts for low to mid distance needing high throughput
- Trains for med-high distance, with limited throughput, for little ressources, but at the cost of more logistic problems to solve.

Making the robots a good replacement for any other system would be a bad idea, cause it would negate the usefulness of that other transport system.
