Inserters not picking up items

This doesn't happen all the time. But sometimes inserters will stop picking up items from a belt as they move past, and they only pick up the item once the belt has backfilled to the pickup point. I have attached an image of the inserter (one of many in this game) that fail to pickup items from the belt. The inserter moves to pickup the item, but just can't grab it.

What version of the game are you using?
Are you using mods?

Please provide a savegame and post your log-file (https://wiki.factorio.com/index.php?title=Log_File).

Greetings Loewchen

If the inserter is too slow to grab the item and can only grab it when the belt is backfilled, check if you have enough electric power. If the inserter doesn't get enough power it will slow down and won't move in time to catch the iron.

You're about 3 steam engines short on power demand there :)

The Consumption bar at the top indicates a percent of total power demanded that's being satisfied.

The Production bar 2nd from the top indicates a percent of total power production being used.

You're super low on power :) (not a bug).

UI bug, very, *very* clearly a UI bug.

Wonder how long denial will last...

You can call it a bug all day long but a bug is a defect in the software such that it doesn't perform how it was designed to perform. The GUI is doing exactly what we programed it to do and therefor isn't a bug.

Now, it can still be poor design (which I think it is) but so far nobody has thought of a better way to convey the power information.

In Jürgen's defense, "bug" is a widespread colloquialism for design-flaw, even amongst engineers. The "bug" metaphor is approximately as valid to either meaning, so even if there is a 100% clear distinction between the formal and colloquial meanings, in many circumstances, the conflation of the two is convenient... this may or may not be one of them, depending on how you feel about the concept/presentation of electric "demand" as a means of conveying to the user that their appliances have started to slow down due to a power supply insufficiency.

I guess I'm just saying so because I might well have made the same comment Jürgen did, although, I admit this usage can be a bit of intellectual sleight-of-hand if you know the difference and the other guy doesn't :)

Regardless, you've thrown down the gauntlet, now, with this bit. I won't even try without sleeping on it. Anyhow that should clearly be separate thread.
