Pollution affecting solar panel output

Hey fellow factoriols,

I'm enjoying factorio a lot and was trying to think of some ideas for improving the game and wanted some feedback. I couldn't find a thread already on this topic so I thought I'd make one. The game already has pollution density in it and I was wondering if that pollution density could be made to affect the output of solar panels. Solar panels seem a little strong imo as I've been playing I've seen little downside to them. My reasoning would be that it would further encourage larger factories and electrical networks as getting the maximum amount of energy would require a distant solar farm, it would make solar panels not a totally brainless part of the game, and realism in games is always worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for reading and would love some feedback.

Searched for you: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17499

There is already a bigger discussion in the balancing board, where one idea was a slow health degeneration. Think it is this: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18613&hilit=solar+panel

Just a thought the more pollution a solar panel has over it the less efficient it should be

There are already a lot of that idea as suggestions:

Pollution reducing solar panel efficiency.

I don't know if this has been suggested before, haven't found any related topics or suggestions.

So, the main idea is that solar panels would be less efficient depending on pollution (in that chunk of map) and in highly polluted areas almost next to useless. That would give the player more focus on the pollution factor except just to keep it low to avoid enemy attacks. The solution would be to either regulate power consumption of "dirty" resources or to build remote solar farms to get the most out of the solar panels outside of the polluted zone.

In addition, it could be an option when generating a new map (a checkbox "pollution affects solar panel efficiency" or something similar), so if you want to play without that feature you can turn it off.
