More diverse alien flora and fauna

There may be a topic on this already, but I couldn't find anything with the search terms I used.
It's always kind of bothered me that the fish and trees look so earth-like (aside from a few exceptions), and that the biters are the only other species around.
I feel like everything should have a more alien feel to it, and possibly have other passive mobs that wander around. Have a strange tree start hitting back when you try to chop it down.

Well, that is some kind of "taste". Have you looked for example at the color of the trees? The forms?
And why should a tree not look a bit like a tree? Functionality makes form. The same with fish. It's quite unlikely, that an alien fish would look very "alien", cause when he lives in the water there is no other way for move fast if you are not looking a bit like a fish. Ok, maybe they have 3 eyes?

Well, maybe it's just my thoughts, most trees/fish on earth have a common ancestor giving them their common form. I do think you're right about common function dictating form.
Though looking at some of the more distantly linked relatives they are very alien looking:
Ha, maybe wandering trees that start to crawl away from your pollution

Depending on air pressure, gravity, type of star the planet orbits, and any number of chemical factors in the environment the flora/fauna could look different. Though I don't think realism need dictate the alien life form's structure. It is a little strange that worm/arthropods, trees, and fish are the only living things on the planet.

More of that stuff did come with every version till now. And I'm sure this will continue, as Albert (the artist) is a big fan of such kind of bringing life onto the planet. He somehwere said, for him Factorio is a big screensaver and likes to see the biters walking around.

If the artists want to add some more biodiversity, I'm all for it. Doubly so if it ends up being something we can use.
Maybe a Greaseberry tree you could refine into oil, or something. Though on second thought, that's more likely to show up in a mod than the main game, I think.

Biters are invasive species that exterminated everything else on the planet.
