I've added factorio as a non-steam game so I can chat with people instead of doing alt tab all the time. I imagine this same problem would also happen in the final steam version?

If I open the overlay with shift+tab and close it with esc, factorio never notices that I've stopped pressing shift. Tapping shift again fixes it.

You are correct, the Steam version suffers from the same problem. I can fix it easily for Steam version, but fix for non-steam version would not be trivial. So, it will be fixed in Steam version only.

Related to this:

If you hold ctrl when launching the game through big picture,
Ctrl will be held down when playing the game (only tested steam version).
Had to quit out and start the game again to fix this.

@Kloan: How did you even do that? If I hold Ctrl in Big Picture, Steam goes completely bonkers and doesn't allow me to click "Play" button.
