Underground map and bosses

Hi folks, what do you thing about undeground map like in Heroes of Might & Magic III,and boss who lives there his tentacles are sticking out on the ground,these are worms which we can now see.if you know what I mean.
I think this is not a big problem, because map generator would be quite poor, some element such as day and night cycle,clouds will be excluded.
Can anyone knows why there is no mountain?

as ssilk would say: What is the gameplay value of that?
