For the research bar at the top right hand corner, would it be possible to have some icon(s) to indicate progress.

One example would be a green arrow to the right if the bar is increasing
This could be coupled with a yellow warning triangle if there's not any research progress.

Alternatively, the Science Pack(s) needed for the research to show, along with a warning superimposed if the research is stopped by a lack of that science pack.

I do think that it would be good for there to be some kind of icon to tell you when science is not being done/ when there is inactive labs.
