0.12.3 - Zooming without scroll wheel is extremely difficult

(Context: My old mouse's failing scroll wheel has finally become so bad that 95% of the time it either doesn't register or scrolls the wrong direction entirely. Needless to say, this makes it pretty much useless. I'll be buying a new one, of course, but getting one you've never tried delivered doesn't always work out well, and it'll be a few days before I have a chance to get to a store.)
I tried a number of alternative bindings for Zoom In and Zoom Out, but all of them suffer from the same problem: Each button-click or keypress zooms by a single increment and then stops, even if you continue holding down the control. This makes zooming extremely slow and tedious, requiring lots of hammering on a key/button, and even then it's nowhere near as fast.
Being unable to zoom effectively is making Factorio so difficult to play that I'm not even bothering right now. A simple "repeat if control still held down" feature would solve the problem. If you really want to be amazing, eventually having it recognize keybinds that can be held down, and scrolling smoothly while they are held (instead of zooming by discrete increments), would be a wonderful addition.
