Heres the idea: Each lab will use the selected type of science pack. For example, if i want a lab to only use red packs, i'll set it to that. This is so that the labs are more flexible, and science packs are easier to manage. There can be one science line purely using redpacks, and the other green packs. so that you don't need every single pack in one lab to research. Since this can change up the style of a factory, we can make it a "Lab machine 2" Kinda like the assembly machine 2.

And material and space requirements skyrocket for little to no gain.

What are the current problems with science pack management?
Doing it the way you suggest would force to change the way science works - right now you need all required science packs for a research step, and changing it would mean different labs would have to communicate to eachother which _part_ of each step they are taking care of...
