As the topic says, what is the biters relation to rails, poles and signals?

I keep reading different things on the net regarding to different versions on the topic of their alignment towards "nonmilitary" structures. I thought that they are more or less passive regarding poles, but today I got 1 pole randomly destroyed. Is there a way to predict biter behaviour?

Setup forward bases where they attempt to destroy things, tis what I do.
