Using underground belts to split a belt

If you have a belt with two different items on it, you can separate them without smart inserters using underground belts. Either end of the underground belt will work!
Sorry if this is common knowledge, I haven't been able to find anything about this on the web and as far as I know it wasn't this way before .12.

It might not be common enough I think - it's on wiki from long time.
And mods that allowed to do this easily are no longer working.

Ah, ok! Do you have a link to it on the wiki? I wasn't able to find it in any of the pages concerning belts or transportation.
edit: Nevermind, I guess I was just a bit negligent in my search:
