Actually it crashes in train logic. Did you place new chain signals onto your rail? There is known bug with that. If not, could you upload your savegame?

I did place a few chain signals and I was standing in the area where they were placed... might have been a coincidence that I would crash once I started research. I'll check that.

Yes, if I remove the chain signals the game won't eventually crash - but I couldn't find an issue entry on this...
