TL;DR
Use random item sprite per layer on a belt Stack
What?
Instead of a stack using the same sprite repeated up to 4 times, use one of the random available sprites, so that stacks of ore look disorderly instead of, uh, stacks of paper.

(Poor paint.net mockup)

Why?
The stacks of ore look less like a pile of jumbled ore, than plastic cutouts, due to the perfectly repeated patterns in the stack. If it used one of the 4 random sprites instead, the illusion would be better maintained.

I strongly prefer the visual clarity over aesthetics: I really dislike this proposed change.

Regarding the aesthetics...
The stacks of ore look less like a pile of jumbled ore
It's not a pile of jumbled ore. It's an orderly collection of 8 separate stacks per belt tile.

+1 we're in quantum state now
(though not so sure if it's so relevant for ores)
