Steam Machine - practically unplayable

Hi, I just got a Steam Machine and controller today, set it up and downloaded Factorio. Saw there was a developer suggested controller binding, so thought it would be good.
I loaded the game, massive lag, audio dropouts on the main menu. I closed the game and switched to compatibility mode and tried again, It took about 10 seconds for mouse-over a button to trigger, before which button clicks don't respond. There's no key binding for tab, so when I finally managed to start a new game I couldn't get past the start dialog, no problem I'll open the on-screen keyboard, didn't work, I changed the button in the game config for continue dialog to one that's mapped and that didn't work either. I gave up

Has anyone managed to get it working properly on a Steam Machine?

I gave it another go and it's been a lot better today, still getting the occasional audio dropout, but mostly OK. It was extremely hot yesterday, so I wonder if the Steam Machine was underclocking itself to keep cool.

Generally the game should run well on the steam machines hardware, you could check temps and clock speeds with some diagnostic software and provide log and debug screenshot as requested here: 68653.
