The price of the game is way to high

I have owned and played factorio since it was first available to the public so to me this is a ~10 year old game.
Recently my son wanted to play with me so we went to look at getting him the game, at $90 Canadian for the full game its just way to much. This very high price has cost a purchase as we will move on to something else.
It is an amazing game but I simply cannot justify this cost for a second copy for our household.

You live in Canada, a wealthy Western country, you enjoyed a computer game for 10 years, and cannot justify 90 CAD (65 US dollars) purchase, to play with your son for another 10 years? What father are you?
we will move on to something else.
And what you are going to play? What ever it is going to be, you have to buy it twice. Probably getting close to that 90 CAD you are refusing to spend.

Everyone has their own opinion on what is a fair price, and everyone makes their own decision to buy or not. Simple as that, no need to question his ability as a father ower it.

When you say "full game", I guess you mean Factorio plus Space Age?
That's $70 US. $90 Canadian is currently the equivalent of $66.22 US, so you're actually getting it cheaper than people in the US do.
Do you go out to the movies? How much do you spend?
Do you go out to eat? How much do you spend?
How many hours of entertainment do you get from the movies? How many from eating out? How many from a PC game?
Of course if you don't have the money to do any of these things, then you certainly shouldn't buy the game, but should focus on feeding your family.

Of course he does. He has internet access, a computer, and enough time to type all of this. He already said he is “moving on,” which apparently includes buying two copies of a different computer game. Besides, Canada ranks among the world’s wealthiest countries by GDP per capita, around 12th globally, and that's where he is from it seems.

I don't mean to harp on you I know that is a fairly high price for a video game but it kind of makes me sad the game's price is so controversial, in general. Almost the only bad reviews the game has is because its price.
it's actually such great value. Factorio is a game you can easily play for hundreds or thousands of hours. It's pennies on the hour. That's not an exaggeration either.
And this is just my own opinion you may not share, I like to support indie developers, especially ones like Wube. I think many AAA titles are just so bad lately and they are double the price. Wube might have more money than they know what to do with (probably not though), but I think they deserve it. Factorio is one of the best games ever made, if you ask me. Not only is it a very well made, well optimized game that still gets updated regularly, it was kind of genera defining.

I am a father that tries to teach my children about financial stability and responsibility.
The game is very good, we have 1 copy. My son plays it and i played it in the past, but we both decided that $90 was way to much money to ask to play this game together.
It is not about if we can afford it or if i spend more on other things, its about what we feel is fair for this product and if its value is there.
$90 can go very far in video gaming. I cannot remember the last time i paid anywhere close to $90 for a computer game, its just out of touch.
I do like that me questioning the $90 price of a game gets me being accused of being a bad father. Nice bunch of people we have here.

Why does your son need the expansion? That way you only need to spend $45 to get a full, feature-complete game to play with your son. If your son is as impulsive as you say (and as all kids are, no slight against your son), surely he'll be bored of it long before even beating the base game. I think this is a good compromise

Have you thought about teaching your child what *value* is? Do you understand the difference between value and price?

You can buy just the base game and you'll still get most of the 2.0 enhancements. There are also many, many mods you can use to enhance your gameplay in various ways if you want to. This way you cut the price in half, and you can wait till later to get the expansion.

With microtransactions the expected lifetime value of a customer is much higher than $90CAD. Heck, a lot of them get more than Factorio out of their players the first time they swipe (looking at you, Endfield). Nintendo's new DK game for the Switch 2 is launching at $70USD. Pragmata just launched at 60 USD with an optional 70 USD version and $15 dlc. Death Stranding 2 asking price is $70 USD. Diablo IV with its expansions is sitting at 70.
Factorio plus expansion is high among indie games, sure, but saying it's uniquely high priced in the PC gaming market as a whole is exactly as out of touch as you're accusing their pricing of being.
I recently passed the 3k hours mark in Factorio. Of the 7 games I have on Steam with over 500 hours, it's only beaten for least spent by Kerbal Space Program.
(Let's also not leave out that a second PC capable of running most modern titles absolutely eclipses a few hundred dollars worth of second game licenses.)

A good ideal. I think you've done the math wrong on this one though. I got Factorio for my dad a while back and he kind of bounced off it eventually, but the few hours we did play together definitely made it some of the best money I've ever spent in gaming.

And this person decided to share their opinion on a public forum with other people who have various other opinions, and now they get to share their opinions too. If all he wanted was validation, he should have went somewhere else.
Your opinion is welcome too, but what is it based on? Where has anyone questioned "his ability as a father?" I only see people sharing economic realities.
I happen to love Wube's pricing. It's transparent, fair, and for the almost ten years I have been playing, they have delivered one of the most polished, carefully designed products I own. If I can afford it, I will buy anything else they sell.
I have almost certainly paid more for the electricity that powers my computer while I play Factorio than I did for the game itself.
