I have a new issue: Whenever I connect an inserter (doesn't matter what kind) to a mining drill it will always output coal no matter what ore deposit it is sitting on. If I connect a storage crate, then an inserter to the miner then everything is ok.

What mods are you using?

Mining drills automatically output where the arrow is pointing. There's no need to use inserters to grab from them.

I'm not using any mods. I am a new player and still learning the ropes and you are right that I should not put inserters directly on mining drills.

If it's a burner drill, the inserter is taking out some of the fuel that you put in, to pass on to the next drill, so that you can chain fuel them from one supply point.
