I'm playing through a Pyanodon (Hard Mode) game, and found a rather egregious violation of the printed automated limit.

I have 3 (mechanical) inserters (with no stack bonus) inserting raw coal into a coal powerplant. As shown in the above image, the printed limit is 5, but it gets loaded up to the low 20s with raw coal.

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for the report.

Machines can increase the insertion limit of their slots.
In case of fuels, the limit is increased to an amount that allows machine's continuous operation for 3 seconds.
Coal powerplant MK 01 has consumption 10 MW, Raw coal has fuel value 1.5 MJ, the limit is increased to 20 raw coals, matching the image.

Duplicate of 124272 Tooltip for automated insertion limit of burnable fuel is often wrong.
