In the splitter interface add a toggle that sends the contents of the right-hand input belt only to the left output belt and vice versa. This will enable much simpler and more compact balancers. Given how powerful splitters already are I don't think this capability is unreasonable.

If your belts carry only one type of item, it can be done by applying the filter.
