Incorrect pipe length

These two pipes are the same length. Is it a bug, a feature, or maybe shoddy work? :D

If you are asking if those two segments have the same vertical dimension, then the answer is yes.

Are you talking about the pipeline extent shown in the tooltip? In that case it's a feature, see https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-430

Actually, I kinda agree that this is unexpected.

On the other hand, pipe difficulty has been nerfed to the extent that this is really not an issue, the only time I actually hit that 320 cap is running lubricant from one side of my factory to the other side, and a single pump fixed the problem. In the old days, keeping a nuclear plant supplied with water was - not hard, but non-trivial.

Yes, making the extent based on the total number of pipes in the pipeline (instead of the maximum of the width and height of the smallest rectangle that encloses the pipeline) would be more rational.
I also find the extent thing strange as it's a rather arbitrary limit (it's not even a power of two!) but it's sufficiently high that it's not even worth thinking about most of the time.
