Linux Laptop for Factorio at 5120x1440@60

I got a new screen. It's a Samsung Odyssey 5120x1440 ultra wide.

My current laptop can only make it work at 5120x1440@30 and Factorio runs at 10-20 FPS.

It is an HP Elitebook 830 G6 and has an "Intel Core i5-8365U CPU", no dedicated graphics card and 16GB of RAM.

How plausible is it to get a second hand laptop that can run 60 FPS Factorio on that screen? Is a better Intel CPU enough or does it need a dedicated GPU?

And what would I have to look for when buying a USB-C dock to go between the two (that also works with my Steam Deck)? Speaking of the Steam Deck, can anybody get the Steam Deck to output 5120x1440?

That's a nice display, I also have a 5120x1440 one and it's terrific.
5120x1440 is 7372800 pixels, while 3840x2160 (4k) is 7516800 pixels. Slightly higher. So if a GPU is specified to support 4k at some Hz, it should also support a 5120x1440 display with the same Hz.
If you look up your CPU on Intel, you will find: https://www.intel.de/content/www/de/de/ ... tions.html
You iGPU does support 4k with 60 Hz if you connect the display with Displayport (not HDMI). Try Displayport, if your machine has a corresponding connector.
However, this will probably just fix the refresh rate, not Factorio running with a somewhat low fps.
The Intel iGPUs evolved in the later CPUs, so you might get a better performance with a newer generation CPU just because of the better iGPU, not necessarily because of some higher CPU performance.

Comparison with a more recent Intel laptop CPU: I got myself an office notebook with an Intel U300 half a year ago, priced 500 Euro. Only iGPU, 16 GB RAM. I'm able to run my 5120x1440 monitor with 60 Hz with it using HDMI. Factorio+Space Age with a medium sized map (not all planets explored) runs with about 45-60 fps. On the internal notebook screen with 1920x1080 the same map runs with stable 60 fps so far.

A benchmark comparison between your CPU and the U-300 is this: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/34 ... Intel-U300
Your CPU is only 26.8% slower than the U-300. If you do research for a newer laptop, check its CPU mark score on that benchmark site to estimate how it might perform in comparison to your old one. Also check the GPU benchmark scores of the iGPU - that benchmark website has a sister website for GPU comparison.

(my experience is with Windows 11, however I guess it will perform the same on Linux, since it's the hardware performance that is relevant here)

Thanks for the comparison! I'll try to buy a better DisplayPort cable. Maybe I can live with the current machine if at least the desktop is 5120x1440@60.

Oops. Typo. That's 3480*2160. 3840*2160 is 8294400. :) Thankfully, that's even more the point I was trying to make: If some GPU is able to do 4k with 60 Hz according to spec, it should be able to do it with 5120x1440 as well.
