Some of these late game achievements are uncommon. Just been playing casually since release. Try to reach a new planet every weekend, playing around with what we have explored thus far throughout the week and knocking out potential achievements. I have the legendary mech armor, but I need to fill it with legendary gear to finish that item off the list.
I am honestly a bit surprised to see such low percentages. Are people not reaching Aquilo?

Keep in mind modded saves don't record achievements on Steam, and of those achievements maybe one is required to beat the game. That's going to keep numbers low.
Of all the new achievements, the highest % one I can see is still only under 18% - researching using automation science. That's basically "play the game for more than 20 minutes".

Perhaps I am naive about something coming up, but what mod is required to complete the game? Historically I don't use any mods until I have finished the vanilla game, and that is the case thus far.

In a technical sense, Quality, Elevated Rails, and Space Age are mods required to finish the game. But they are part of the expansion and so don't affect achievements. No additional, unofficial mods are required.

I meant of those achievements only one may be required to win - legendary items seems to be mostly relegated to after hitting the victory screen, and people have said they've never had to kill ANY demolishers to win. Fusion power, I don't know.

My last achievement unlock is some automatic mid game standard thing from 3 years ago. Since then, I only play modded. I guess I'm not alone with this gaming approach. I really don't care about this. The achievement names are funny, but I don't run after carrots. Did that once for an MMO, have been cured of this fortunately. Now I'm just playing for myself, not for anybody else.

This game is all about 'chasing carrots'.
But, I am glad you clarified your point. The way I read it I thought you had played through already and hit some kind of obstacle that was not possible without a mod being loaded. Relieved to learn that was not what you meant at all!

personally, i just play the standalone version, not the steam version, because i don't want automatic updates. since i did buy the base game on steam many years ago, i'm one of probably quite many that cause low achievement percentages and this is unlikely to change.

Space Age steam power is an 18.3% achievement percentage, and that is probably damn near everyone on Steam that bought the game since you get that super early.
Everything else goes down from there.
Creating a space platform is 6%, so less than a third of the people that got steam running.
Visiting Vulcanus is 3.7%
Visiting Fulgora is 3.1%
Visiting Gleba is 2.5%
Visiting Aquilo is 0.9%
These numbers either mean people are not progressing, or as it gets more challenging they are resorting to mods in order to make progress, and that results in killing the achievement progression.
Just an observation based on the numbers.

As can be seen by the steam (lol) achievement on steam only 20% or so have played much of anything (unmodded) which is actually pretty high for a steam game - many people buy games aspirationally or with the intent to play but don’t get around to it.
And there are certainly decent numbers of players who simply don’t care about achievements at all and play modded from the start ( or simply don’t chase rare unrequired ones).
Steam and Wube would have more numbers but I’d not be surprised if half the purchasers of SA haven’t even downloaded it yet. As it won’t go on sale it’s already the cheapest it’ll ever be.

I've never really cared much about achievements. I typically always make my own rules about how I wanna play, since long before steam and achievments were a thing. I do have certain ridiculous goals that are up there with getting all of the official achievements, but they are my own goals, not some pre-defined ones.
All that being said, I am still currently wrapping up on Gleba, on to Vulcanus and wont go to Aquillo until after. I probably won't ever even open the achievments screen or spend any time trying to complete them.
Also, I use the standalone game with updates disabled.

Just an observation based on the numbers.
Also note that these percentages are calculated over all people that own Factorio. Not all people that own SpaceAge. So if 40% of the people that own Factorio got SpaceAge then 9.25% of the SpaceAge owners got to Vulcanus with the achievement.
For the steam power achievement, I would guess you can earn that without SpaceAge, but, people that bought the game years ago, played it then, and stopped playing, didn't get that achievement at all, but are still counted for the achievement percentage so lowering it below what you would expect.
What you see with other games, is that 80-90% of the people that buy the game play it within a year, but engagement quickly drops off to 40% of the players after that. The CaveStory+ achievements follow pretty linear progression, and you see a pretty linear player dropoff until 40%
https://steamcommunity.com/stats/CaveStory/achievements
So, with knowing all that, 20% on the SteamPower achievement is actually really good. As it means 20% of the people that ever bought Factorio have played it in the last few months. And at least 25% of that have bought SpaceAge, else they couldn't have build a platform.

I think many people have not reashed Aquilo YET.
For my self atleast, I'm enjoying playing the game, I'm in no rush to "finish" the game. F.ex. I'm currently buissy decorating my Nauvis factorys with the newly discovered ability to plant trees. No time to rush of to build a ship to take me to Aquilo when there is so much gardening to do!

I've been playing space age since it came out, and I haven't even done Gleba yet, let alone Aquillo.
I wonder if I'm just really bad at this game....

None of them are required, but many of them make the game way more fun. I'm not the only one who technically never played vanilla SA

Not at all. I don't need to achieve anything. It's a building game, the virtual version of playing with building blocks as child, or playing with a toy electric train, or with a metal construction kit. At least, that's what I see in this game, and why it is so much fun for me. I like the building. The process of starting with a clean sorted box of items, creating some interesting composite work out of it, until at the end mommy enters and demands: "clean this up, I need to vacuum".

My son plays that way. Everything I build is functional based on inputs and outputs.
His builds are also efficient, but they are also aesthetic. He decorates with concrete bases and makes everything look nice. They are almost art when he gets done, though it takes a while.
And, what made me think of that, is that he was also all gung ho about planting trees!

I play a lot of Factorio, probably on average an hour every day. I am still enlarging my factory on Nauvis. There are many many many things to build (and to beautify) before I even consider going to space. They said it may take five years before the next expansion comes out, so there is time. I will get to one of the planets before that but not today, probably not this month, maybe not before Easter, and that is fine.

There's no rush to reach Aquilo. I've put a *lot* more hours into the game after SA came out, and I'm still optimising my production and figuring out Gleba.
Also, out of those four achievements you only really need the fusion one. You don't even *need* to kill big demolishers unless you really want to expand your Vulcanus to megabase levels.

The TLDR is that those percentages effectively mean absolutely nothing (and never will) except that some non-zero number of people have earned them playing the Steam install without using any mods.

My situation: I purchased the game through Steam (0.16), but if you look at my Steam page, it appears I have not played it since 2021, when I had about 1700 hours logged. I have probably quadrupled that since then playing the standalone "zip" file version of the game that I download directly from the site.
None of the achievements I earned in Space Age figure toward the percentages, even though I played (and beat the game) on totally default settings.
I like the achievements as a personal thing--a way to keep the game interesting, which is one of the reason I keep multiple installs on my PC-- but I could not care less about them as some kind of public thing or that my successes don't figure in the percentage.
