hi. with updated pipes and 50k fluid wagons barrels became totally useless. the only usage is to start coal liquefaction. it could be a good way for storage since 1tile chest can hold about the same amount as 9 tile tank, but it is extremely expensive. i think barrels should be way cheaper, for example 10 barrels per 1 steel, or use iron instead of steel, or hold more liquid

I've been using barrels for cold Fluoroketone in Space Age. In fact, I don't think you could get by without them.

Uranium mining is nearest early-game (in Space Age) example.
Making acid on the spot is an overkill.
Dedicating whole wagon to acid hauling is an overkill.
But if you toss few barrels into your cargo...
Also, smuggling Lubricant to space.

I also use barrelled sulfuric acid to deliver it to Fulgora. There I only need it to build higher quality blue circuits from split up high quality red and green circuits. So for that little sulfuric acid needed I don't really bother with setting up a whole production chain there.
So the role of barrels hasn't really changed. They're meant as an alternative way to deliver small amounts of liquids, but not for transport on a large scale.
