I have '
middle-click' set to the
pipette tool and it also crashes with the same error message -
The 'crash' occurs right after the cursor goes over the character in the 'story'. In the story, after the burner-inserter is removed (instead of being selected ?) from the hot-bar (and seems placement is supposed to happen), the crafting menu is opened and a transfer belt is clicked (but doesn't appear), then the cursor seems to be placing it (but again none appear) and then the cursor goes over the character and (maybe after a failed left-click on it) the crash message appears,
the first issue here seems to be that the burner inserter is "selected" with the 'middle-click' which in-game actually removes it from the hot-bar so that behavior is consistent but doesn't seem to be the desired action. then there is the 'middle-click' to select an item that's not in inventory which is supposed to make it be a ghost in the cursor
So while writing the above paragraph, I remembered that I manually changes the
pipette tool to the '
middle-click' because that's how I like it and I also added the '
shift-Q' as secondary
pipette tool control because I wasn't able to ghost-select anything (like I was seeing being done on youtube). This led me to think that maybe that change is conflicting with another control setting and I went to controls and found that under
inventory the '
toggle filter' option also uses '
middle-click'. changing that key fixed both issues for me - now the story runs correctly AND I can ghost-select anywhere with '
middle-click'.

This includes selecting from the hot-bar, within conditions, from the crafting menu and even from inside machines - all of which I wasn't possible with
middle-click as long as both '
pipette tool' and '
toggle filter' where set to the same key
as can be seen in the picture I set the '
toggle filter' control to '
shift middle-click'
