Stuttering and eventually freezing on linux

Trying to play on garuda linux, at first the game would immediately freeze on startup. I eventually managed to get all the graphics settings set to minimum, and the game was able to load my save... but would freeze every so often for ~5s, until eventually it would just lock up entirely, sometimes seeming to kill the display -- even if i kill the factorio process, the display is still locked and the only was to clear it was rebooting.
The desktop should be plenty beefy to run it, most likely something to do with the gfx drivers, but i've no idea how to approach debugging it.
Some system details:
- kde plasma 6.2.2
- factorio on steam build ID 16303643
- Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti
- Nvidia driver v 565.57.01
