In 2.0 the limit of how many wires per electric pole was removed. It doesn't look like the algorithm for choosing automatic connections was optimized at all though. It's pretty much out of control.

I'm assuming it would be a lot of work to make the automatic wire connections behave nicely. I'm also willing to accept the possibility that "rats nest" is the aesthetic you were going for.

But I think there are many out there who would prefer an option for "disable automatic electric pole connections", so we can just do it manually. I know I can shift-click and clear it all out first, but it would be nice to not have to do that every time.
