No more modular bases?

As the rockets now return the science packs only to the cargo landing pad,
I guess modular bases (many small bases where everything is produced from scratch on-site) are impossible?

No you can produce science a little everywhere, and send it to orbit from a bit everywhere because you can make rocket silos everywhere.

The limitation on the landing pad forces one only to have the "labs" near a landing pad i'd say. That is a less severe restriction to me.

There is a mod already for having multiple landing pads though, so that must still be felt like a strong restriction by some players i suppose :)

But much of the science doesn't need to go into orbit at all.

I would rather say that the space science has to be transported back to the (modular) factory where the labs are. That would be extremely annoying, except that the science from other planets has to be handled the same way anyway, so it's in practice only a small incremental complication. (That is, if one is playing Space Age. If not, then the 'extremely annoying' stands.)

Well the science that don't need to go in orbit aren't changed for the purpose of the modular base so i don't bother discussing them.

It's only those that required a transit thru a landing pad that would be seen as a bottleneck preventing modular base since there is one per planet. That means all the sciences that you can only make in "not-nauvis-where-the-lab-are" need to go trhu the landing pad of nauvis.

This doesn"t prevent you from producing such science in various modules spread apart very far away on vulcanus or Fulgora or Aquilo.

Even in Gleba, where the science pack can spoil, you can produce science 10000 km away from the landing pad, because you send it to orbit from that far away location, to space, for it to be consumed in nauvis.

The "bottleneck" would be the nauvis landing pad.

Ok now i think i understand the original post better . The problem would be in 2.0, not in space age, you don't get the space science in the silo that launched the rocket, but instead in the landing pad ? I have no knowledge on this. I can understand how it could be a concern but i'm puzzled that landing pad and such mechanism would be there if you don't use space age
