[1.1.110] Splitter not operating when inserter places something directly on it.

Hi there.
I am trying to make a chest and inserter storage/buffer system. And in trying to make it as efficient and compact as possible (as one does), I came across an interaction between splitters and inserters. When an inserter places objects directly on a splitter, the splitter does not perform its operation. I think this is because inserters place onto the "opposite" side of belts, thus placing objects into the splitters 'output' instead of its 'input'. BUT, When an inserter places objects from the sides onto the splitters, the splitters operate as intended.
In the attached video I show the different operations. (Left to Right)
1) This is the operation I was trying to get working that didn't operate as I hoped.
2) Adding a single belt allows it to work.
3) These show splitter operation when inputted from the sides.
Not absolutely sure if this is a bug or an "unintended feature".
Thanks!
