This is probably me just being a noob, and there are definitely better ways to do this (although I don't really know much about it), but I tend to barrel and unbarrel when my light oil/heavy oil tanks are getting too full, so that my refineries keep working.
I have a small circuit setup to barrel it when it's getting near capacity and unbarrel it when it nearly empties.
Since barrels take up a lot less space, it all fits nicely into a chest.
I am somewhat limited for space in my refinery because I built like an idiot and it's surrounded on 3 sides by other construction. Had I done a proper job, I could probably just set up some better autobalancing via cracking or just build more tanks.
