Did some testing.
Put in the standard 6-6 belt balancer (who made these things? they are awesome :P ).
- Full output capacity: full balanced unload.
- Reduced output capacity: when the backup reaches the inserters, unloading chests 1,3,5,7,9,11 continues, 2,4,6,8,10,12 stop until the uneven chests are empty, or full output is reached. Output per half is still balanced.

I wondered if it was possible to keep all chests balanced.
Came up with this. Upper station contraption balances all chests, and delivers full compression when needed.
Downsides:
- 2 tiles wider per station side
- more expensive
- damn ugly
So very Factorio

Tested with creative mode mod in 16.25

Shaved 1 tile width off the ugly one. Shamelessly ripped from vanatteveldt.

Here is a 16.27 16.25 version with another trick to compress stuff.
Added remarks:
- No solution for uneven belt backup. (Balancers not included)
- Only tried with full stack bonus reseach.
- Not tested in other configuration
That said:
6 fully compressed blue belts. Small train, small station. Fast unloading. No combinators :)
[EDIT:] Added remarks from Impetus. TY!
the 76 march still works in 0.16.36 on the condition that none of them are placing on curved belts still very useful
