My vote is basically no. With two provisos:
Firstly, train variety is a nice thing for mods. There are lots of genuinely good ideas that just don't really fit with the "puzzle aspect" of Factorio, but are fine ideas to be implemented as mods.
Secondly: In stock while the standard locomotive is fine, I wouldn't mind a late game nuclear-powered "Behemoth Crusher", A locomotive which is nuclear-powered, has massive hitpoints and crushes behemoth biters: why? Because standard locomotives tend to get screwed over pretty badly when they hit a behemoth biter and since you can't automate replacement of trains the only real resort is to completely wall the biters out of your rail network. Maybe the (hopefully) upcoming artillery wagon will help reduce this concern though.
