Another thing which saves uranium is if you use a no-waste nuclear reactor. At the moment in a Deathworld game I'm running both a 160MW nuclear reactor and about 90MW of coal power (total electricity consumption about 60MW), I don't particularly mind wasting the coal and it helps the U-235 stockpile to build up since the reactor is a no-waste design running at about 25% of capacity - in fact at this load level a single U-235 can power the reactor for 1.5 hours. Incidentally I do need the oversized power setup to get maximum firing rate out of my laser turrets when they are taking down behemoth biters - nominal usage is 60MW but that can spike to 200MW easy (and if I'm doing offensive laser turreting, that's 200MW sustained!). Trying to provide that kind of power stability out of coal or solar/accu would've sucked.
