I have setup 2 largish mining outposts (copper and iron with 118 and 150 drills) to supply 120 electric smelters of each ore, I setup 3 trains with 4 wagons for each and I can anecdotally proclaim that stack inserters with full bonus and trains with 4 wagons move a crazy amount of ore in very short time! My fears were unfounded! 
I am WAY over engineered for the requirements...So onto more smelters, more lanes and more stuff. Thanks for everyone's input.
