An old thread, but game across it during my search so going to post how I got it to work on MacOS with Factorio installed through Steam in case anyone else wonders.
The short version:
Remark! You should not specify the full path to your savegame. Instead use only the name of the save as you specified it when playing.
Further, I'm not sure whether it's very fond of spaces. So if you have problems and you have spaces in the savegame name --> try removing them. And by removing I mean make a new savefile in-game without spaces.
