Turns out you can just slow your ship down mid flight if you think you'll need to. Just remove the fuel storage tanks and then manually taking the inserter on and off to slow down thruster fuel generation so you stay around 20 km/s helps a lot. You only get slightly more asteroids but you can just max out your storage bay with ammo beforehand.

Ideally you'd be able to read your thruster's thrust level or your ship's speed and toggle it with the circuit network, but there seems to be no way to do this. So yoinking it is.
Or, if you're already driving a platform manually, you can just hit "pause thrust" on the Space Platform Hub, and let your platform just sit there until it regenerates the ammo it needs.

You can put a pump between fuel/oxidizer generation and the engines then use a circuit to do pwm

Ah, also didn't realize you could make a clock using just deciders. I used to use a silly belt reader with a piece of ore in a loop that wouldn't be practical on a ship.

You can have your hub output V for velocity and then hook it to a pump that feeds fluid into your rocket engines. You can then set the desired speed at any time you want. You can get even more granular than this if you want controlling fluid being pumped while parked or even depending on what planet you are going to through the decider combinators if you want.

Railguns
Rocket turrets are the counter to big asteroids. Railguns are for the huge ones.
Yeah i had not realized OP rage quit earlier than railguns unlock.

It didn't occured to me that you can get stuck lacking weapons to kill asteroids just after the unlock of the rocket turret and not even think of trying to use them. But after reading carefully the poorly argumented rant, it appears that it was written by a player that indeed didn't realize it was supposed to use the weapons unlocked in early game to progress further in more difficult area. I realize now such novel concept ought to be explained with more simpler term in the factoriopedia or something.
